| India - The Culture The People : |
| |
India is the most exotic country in the world. Its strength lies in its ‘unity in diversity’, and what makes India most appealing is the fact that its old rich cultural heritage is still not lost on the people. India is one place where you get to see everything ranging from snow capped peaks, to hot Deccan plateaus, and from lush green plains to dry Thar Desert.
India is the biggest democratic country in the world, with a population of over one thousand million people, spread over 2,973,190 sq km land. The Indian subcontinent is surrounded by water on three sides, which makes it a wonderful place for enjoying water sports such as scuba diving, yachting etc.
India’s archaeological heritages also appeal to people all over the world. There are innumerable tourist places in India and there is something for each one of you. India is such a vast and diverse country that it its variety and diversity is sure to amuse anyone. The places of visit are endless. There are many cities and small towns where you get to feel the pulse of India.
India is considered to be one of the first places where civilizations began, with Harrapa and Mohenjodaro (the remains of which can still be found in Pakistan and parts of western India). Interestingly enough, Indians still seem to follow some of the age old traditions and customs such as worship of the lord Shiva.
In fact it is not just the Vedas that have influenced the country’s culture and heritage. India, being well known as ‘the golden bird’, during the medieval times, was always a great fascination and the favorite target of many invaders. And the very fact that traces of various cultures and rulers are still so prominent now makes it the favorite destination for tourists.
India is one country where people from different religions and cultures live harmoniously together. India’s social fabric is based on the religious sentiments of the people and religion plays a vital part of an Indian’s daily life. Since India has been invaded and ruled by innumerable conquerors coming from diverse backgrounds and religions, they all have left a mark on the Indian culture. The Mughals left their mark in the Muslims and the British left their mark in the Christians and the Anglo Indian community. This has brought into India diversity in its culture, and the most remarkable quality of the Indians is that people belonging to different communities live harmoniously together.
India can be called a land of festivals too. Since there are so many religions in India there are that many numbers of festivals too. Hinduism, Islam, Christianity are the main religions and it is not uncommon to find people of one community celebrating the festivals of the other community. At Christmas if you are in India you are likely to forget that you are not in your home town and during Diwali no one resist the temptation of bursting crackers! This quality of India and the Indian people has made it a unique nation and India is on the path of rapid progress in the world scenario. India is keeping pace with the changing world but at the same time has not completely discarded its traditions and values and this is what makes India different from other countries of the world.
